After 40 years iconic hip-hop artist Slick Rick is finally getting his US citizenship. Many of you might be suprised by this, but Slick Rick was actually born in London and moved to New York with his family when he was 11 years old. He signed to Def Jam in 1986, and released his legendary debut album “The Great Adventures of Slick Rick” in 1988. His problems begun 2 years later when he shot his cousin Mark Plummer, claiming self-defense. The latter survived, and Rick got sentenced to 5 years in prison. This caused him many issues in the future, including three attempts to deport him to UK – first in 2001, second in 2003 and one more in 2006. Ultimately, he was given full and unconditional pardon on the attempted murder charges in 2008 by New York’s Governor David Paterson, who praised the legendary MC for his behavior since his release from jail. This allowed Slick Rick to apply for US citizenship, which was finally granted to him this month.

While obviously proud and happy that he can finally call himself a citizen of the country that he’s been living in for the past 40 years, Slick Rick also mentioned that he doesn’t intend to give up his native UK citizenship.
